Das Museum Brandhorst geht mit der „Flag Commission“ über die Grenzen des Ausstellungsraums hinaus und präsentiert eigens in Auftrag gegebene Kunstwerke in der Nachbar:innenschaft des Stadtbezirks Maxvorstadt. Normalerweise werben die Fahnen, die an der Ecke Türken- und Theresienstraße aufgestellt sind, für die aktuellen Ausstellungen des Museums. Ab September 2023 bespielt der in Amsterdam und München lebende Künstler Philipp Gufler den Ort mit einer neuen Arbeit. Mit seiner charakteristischen Vorgehensweise rekontextualisiert er queere Geschichte in seinen oft textilbasierten Werken. Nur wenige Künstler haben auf Zypern so unauslöschliche Spuren hinterlassen wie Glyn Hughes. Der Waliser, der fast sechs Jahrzehnte lang (1956-2014) ununterbrochen auf der Insel lebte, wirkte als Katalysator für die Entwicklung der zeitgenössischen Kunst in Zypern, und nicht nur das.
Als Maler, Bühnenbildner, Regisseur, Lehrer und Pädagoge, Journalist, Kunstkritiker und Filmkritiker, Schriftsteller, Dichter und Pionier der Performancekunst auf Zypern war Glyn Hughes eine facettenreiche Persönlichkeit, voller Intensität, Farbe und Licht, genau wie sein Werk.
Im Laufe der Zeit war Glyn Hughes nicht nur immer in einschneidenden Ereignissen auf der Insel präsent, sondern war auch ein methodischer und zugleich leidenschaftlicher Pionier des abstrakten Expressionismus auf Zypern. Mit seinem vielfältigen Beitrag schuf Hughes die Voraussetzungen für die aktive Beteiligung der Öffentlichkeit an vielen neuen und innovativen Dingen, die im Bereich der Kunst geschehen.

Das NiMAC ist im renovierten Gebäude des Old Powerhouse untergebracht, das sich nach einer Vereinbarung zwischen der Elektrizitätsbehörde Zyperns und der Stadtverwaltung von Nikosia im historischen Zentrum von Nikosia befindet. Das NiMAC wurde am 14. Januar 1994 eingeweiht und ist das älteste und größte Zentrum für zeitgenössische Kunst auf der Insel. Seine architektonische Restaurierung und Umwandlung in einen wunderschönen Kunst- und Kulturraum wurde 1994 mit dem Europa Nostra Award ausgezeichnet. In den mehr als zwanzig Jahren seines Bestehens hat das Nicosia Arts Centre mehr als achtzig Ausstellungen moderner und zeitgenössischer Kunst unter Beteiligung bekannter Künstler aus Zypern und dem Ausland organisiert und präsentiert. Viele dieser Ausstellungen wurden in Zusammenarbeit mit Museen, Kunstzentren und kulturellen Einrichtungen in Europa und anderen Ländern organisiert.

The beach is located within the British Western Sovereign Base Area, one of two territories (the other being Dhekelia) controversially retained by the British under the 1960 treaty of independence. Im Juli 2016 begannen Simon Pruciak und Alexandra Reddaway ihre einjährige Weltumrundung mit dem Motorrad. Die Reise begann in Brasilien, Südamerika, und führte über 45 000 km durch 40 Länder und 4 Kontinente. Im Juli 2017 hat das Paar die Weltumrundung erfolgreich abgeschlossen und ein umfangreiches Archiv an Foto- und Filmmaterial geschaffen. Ausgewähltes Material wird in der kommenden Ausstellung zu sehen sein.
Die Reise wurde entlang moderner und historischer Handelsrouten kartiert. Im Laufe der Jahrhunderte hat sich die Kontrolle der Handelsrouten als weitaus profitableres Unterfangen erwiesen als der bloße Besitz von Rohstoffquellen. Die Existenz und das Gedeihen der Handelswege waren von einem sicheren Umfeld für die Abwicklung des Handels abhängig. Ihre Untersuchung kann daher viel über die Wechselwirkungen zwischen den Handelsregionen und über die Faktoren aussagen, die zu wirtschaftlichem Aufschwung oder im Gegenteil zu wirtschaftlichem Niedergang und politischem Zusammenbruch geführt haben. Die Arbeit erforscht die Oberflächen der Handelsrouten und die Reise der Reisenden entlang dieser Routen.

Die vierte Ausgabe des Buffer Fringe Festivals wurde unter der künstlerischen Leitung von Charalambia Theophanous organisiert und fand zwischen dem 08.-11.11.2017 in der Altstadt von Nikosia statt. Das Festival fand an verschiedenen nicht-theatergebundenen Orten und öffentlichen Plätzen statt: in Garage, am Faneromeni-Platz, am Selimiye-Platz, am Arasta-Platz, am Bedesten und im Bandabulya.
Alle Aktivitäten im Rahmen des Festivalprogramms waren öffentlich, für alle zugänglich und kostenlos. Das Publikum hatte die Möglichkeit, insgesamt 14 einzigartige Darbietungen aus verschiedenen Genres zu genießen, darunter Tanz, Theater, Musik, Malerei und Installationen. Zusätzlich zu den 7 lokalen Darbietungen aus ganz Zypern kamen auch 7 internationale Darbietungen aus Spanien, Deutschland, Irland, Japan, dem Vereinigten Königreich und Griechenland hinzu. Deepti Barth presents TRANSGRESSION at the home of the Cyprus Visual Artists Association (24.10.13–16.11.13), the Phytorio, located within the Nicosia Municipal Gardens and at the Office gallery, just a few metres from the Buffer Zone. The work explores issues of restriction.
The material was shot and filmed in November of 2012 at the Nicosia International Airport. The lens follows the movement of a paraplegic Greek-Cypriot through this location: an area within the Buffer Zone controlled by the United Nations Peacekeeping Forces in Cyprus. Photographs and video narrate the progression of the protagonist in a fragmented, often non-linear way, beginning on the runway, continuing on the uphill ramp of the terminal building. The paraplegic breaks though barbed wire and a locked entrance door, advancing through the corridors of the main building to reach what used to be a departure lounge – transgressing a decision that was taken by the UNFICYP six months before filming, to strictly prohibit access to the terminal building “for safety reasons” (sic).

Die Tragödien, die sich derzeit im Mittelmeerraum ereignen, machen erneut deutlich, wie wichtig dieses geschlossene Meer ist, das man als "flüssigen Kontinent" bezeichnen kann, der ein äußerst politischer und politisierter Raum ist. Man könnte auch argumentieren, dass das Mittelmeer für Europa der 'irrationale Unterleib ist, der Unordnung, Grenzverletzungen, koloniale Phantome und einen unheimlichen Anspruch auf eine gemeinsame, mythisch glorreiche, alte Vergangenheit mit sich bringt' [rivistapolitics.wordpress.com]. Heute ist dieses vielschichtige und komplizierte Gebilde, das in den Augen des Westens jahrelang als orientalistischer Hort der Korruption und Rückständigkeit an den Rand gedrängt wurde, zu einem offensichtlichen und unvermeidlichen Brennpunkt politischen Handelns geworden.
Vor allem die Ausstellung "Terra Mediterranea: In Action" will zeigen, wie zeitgenössische Künstler aus dem Mittelmeerraum und der internationalen Kunstszene im Zeitalter der Globalisierung und der zunehmenden Sichtbarkeit "peripherer" künstlerischer Aktivitäten Fragen der Geschichte, Erinnerung und Politik verhandeln. Die Ausstellung umfasst eine Vielzahl von Präsentationsformaten wie visuelle Arbeiten, Performances, theoretische Diskussionen, Filmvorführungen, Vorträge, Literatur- und Gedichtlesungen, öffentliche Interventionen und Bildungsprogramme.

The Office gallery is delighted to present the most recent work from the controversial, British artist/taxidermist Polly Morgan titled ‘FOUNDATIONS AND REMAINS’. Since 2005 the London based artist has managed to create a visual language of her own through the use of animals as raw materials of her work and their placement as protagonists in scenes that are unnatural to them.
Though her peculiar work, she is forcing us to look at the animals used, as if for the first time, free from previous associations, deliberately challenging the fragile relationship between humans and animals.
The major work of the exhibition titled ‘FOUNDATIONS/REMAINS’ has been made using 2428 cast crow femurs that are each painted by hand. The glue used is identical in colour to the fat present in the joints of bones, so it bears the same colour and consistency of a real animal skeleton. This work is inspired by Charnel Houses (Ossuaries) which were decorative buildings essentially used to pile high skeletons in order to save space. The structure was built using plans from Sol Lewitt's spiral tower “Untitled” 1989.

The St Mary’s Mother and Baby Home was run by the Bon Secours Sisters on behalf of the Irish State to house unmarried mothers and their children. The location of the graves of 796 infants and children who died in the Home between 1926 and 1961 is unknown, though local knowledge, the research of local historian Catherine Corless, and recent excavations point to a field near the old site of the Home, as well as the likelihood that some children were illegally adopted. International media attention in 2014 led to the Irish government’s Commission of Investigation into Mother and Baby Homes, which is still underway.
MOTHERBABYHOME is a 796-page ‘report’ comprising conceptual and visual poetry. An excavation of voices, the poems are composed entirely of text taken from historical archives and contemporary sources related to the Home.

For Comma 38, artist and publisher Arnaud Desjardin will exhibit new, old, rare, and popular books while running an active printing press in Bloomberg Space. His COMMA commission, part of an ongoing project titled The Book on Books on Artists' Books, is intended to create an active and participatory review of current and historical practice. This exhibition is about both the display of books on artists' books and the production of a book about the books displayed. He intends to print a first edition, a book of books, a critical anthology and source book, alongside which a large range of books on artists' books will be displayed in a series of vitrines.
Artists' books have normally been sold and distributed through small networks of bookshops and galleries that often produce lists of available titles in printed form. The advent of the Internet has meant that information online has changed the nature of this documentary evidence. Desjardin's unique and extraordinary combination of display and production makes an exhibition that actively engages in both the making and disseminating in real time. Double Gaze ist eine Ausstellung der britischen Künstler George Saxon und David Ferry.
George Saxon ist seit den späten 1970er Jahren in den Bereichen Film, Video, Ton und Performance tätig. Er ist Mitbegründer der Künstlergruppe Houswatch, Cinematic Architecture for Pedestrians, in der er seit 1985 Multiscreen-Arbeiten schafft, die sich in bestehende oder eigens geschaffene Architektur einfügen. Sein Escalator, der mit dem charakteristischen Innenraum der Galeria ON harmoniert, gehört zu einer Serie, die sich der Beziehung zwischen Körper und Technologie widmet. Grundlage des Films ist ein die Treppe hinunter- und hinaufgehender männlicher Akt, dessen defragmentierter Körper an Szenen aus Gemälden von Bosch, Cantarini oder Caravaggio erinnert.
David Ferry ist vor allem für seine grafischen Fotomontagen bekannt, die sich auf das kulturelle Erbe des Künstlers beziehen. Laut HA Harrisonsind diese Kompositionen Fenster, in denen sich die äußere Realität mit der inneren vermischt und sowohl ein Gefühl von Déja-Vu als auch von Entfremdung hervorruft. Er ist Stipendiat der Pollock/Krasner Foundation und Träger des British Arts and Humanities Research Award. Seine Arbeiten wurden kürzlich in der Amilie A. Wallace Gallery in New York ausgestellt. The starting point of this publication—and its eponymous exhibition held in Zurich in Spring 2017—is the conceptual encounter between English Pop art artist Richard Hamilton (1922–2011) and Swiss historian and critic of architecture Sigfried Giedion (1888–1968), famous for his landmark book "Space, Time, and Architecture," an influential history of modern architecture published in 1941.
In 1949 Richard Hamilton—then a member of the London-based Independent Group— realized the “Reaper” print series as a reaction to Giedion’s 1948 book “Mechanization Takes Command” in which he describes the mechanization of everyday life. Reproducing Hamilton’s complete “Reaper” series juxtaposed with selected examples of illustrations created by Giedion alongside many related illustrations, this publication brings together seven essays by renowned international scholars, all of whom question the relationships between visual arts, technology, science, and architecture. Among the many topics discussed are Hamilton’s early works and exhibition installation practice, postwar British biotechnology and architecture, “Hippie Modernism,” and the visual strategy of Giedion’s books.

Following the example of French and British railway companies, C.P. (Portuguese Railways) built houses and social facilities between 1910-20, to support its employees and their families. Key projects implemented during the first quarter of the twentieth century included the Boneca neighbourhood, for retired railway workers, and the Vila Verde neighbourhood, in the alignment of the Bairro Camões neighbourhood. The latter was built in 1926 designed by Cottinelli Telmo and Luís da Cunha. All these neighbourhoods are located in the city of Entroncamento. The city itself was created because of the railways. The station was the first dwelling - at the time a small tent (1862). This new venture provoked major migration from the interior of Portugal, of those who wanted to work for the Company. As a consequence, C.P. (Portuguese Railways) developed a plan, involving a series of ambitious social support structures, perhaps unique at the national level. The company built neighbourhoods for employees, a school, a supplies warehouse, an anti-tuberculosis dispensary that operated as a health centre and also encouraged the development of sporting activities. In parallel with technological evolution and development of railway activities, the workshop area was expanded, included reinforced staff training, which reached a peak when a training centre was built, that is today called FERNAVE, house in a huge building, built from scratch for these functions and which formerly housed the Instituto Superior de Transportes (Higher Transport Institute).

Klang Farben Text ist ein dreitägiges Festival für Visuelle Poesie, das von der internationalen Bewegung für Konkrete Poesie der 1950er und 60er Jahre inspiriert ist. Das Projekt feiert, wie sich diese Bewegung in neue Generationen von Dichtern und Künstlern fortzeugt: Zwölf der einfallsreichsten Vertreter dieser Richtung aus Großbritannien und Deutschland treffen sich zu gemeinsamen Arbeiten und Auftritten in München. Sie lassen erleben, wie das gedruckte Wort sich auch in Film und Performance verwandelt und wie die Konkrete oder Visuelle Poesie über das Medium der Druckseite hinausgewachsen und zu einer Form der Erlebniskunst für das 21. Jahrhundert geworden ist. Die teilnehmenden Dichterinnen und Dichter arbeiten paarweise miteinander und präsentieren an den Abenden neue Performances, kurze Poesiefilme sowie auch Impressionen zu einem bedeutenden klassischen Werk Konkreter Poesie.

Das Buch wurde im Rahmen der Einzelausstellung von Hasan Aksaygin veröffentlicht, die sich in einer parafiktionalen Erzählung mit der Geschichte Zyperns unter der Herrschaft des britischen Empire befasste.
Da diese im Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre stattfand, stand die Geschichte der Elektrizität im kolonialen Zypern im Mittelpunkt seiner Schau.
Den Ausgangspunkt seines Projekts bildet eine Explosion im alten Elektrizitätswerk von Nikosia im Jahr 1947, die auf die Vernachlässigung der problematischen Machtverhältnisse zwischen der britischen Kolonialregierung Zyperns, der Stadtverwaltung von Nikosia und dem privaten Elektrizitätsunternehmen im Besitz der Elite zurückzuführen ist, das die Stadt damals mit Strom versorgte.
Hasan Aksaygin konzentrierte sich bei seinen Recherchen auf die Ursachen und Auswirkungen dieses Vorfalls und nutzte die aus verschiedenen Archiven, historischen und akademischen Materialien gewonnenen Informationen, um eine spekulative visuelle und textliche Erzählung zu schaffen, die eine neugotische Erzählung oder eine Neuauflage des gotischen Märchens Frankenstein beschreiben könnte.

Christophoros Kyriakides was born in Nicosia, Cyprus in 1949. He was an architecture draughtsman and considered himself an inventor. In 1988 he self-published “Six Continents Stars Compass”, ‘an entertaining and educational’ board game. He considered the game inventive, recreative and formative for all ages and intended its global distribution. The game received no recognition from the public and now only a few copies exist.
In the board game, Kyriakides draws a journey with impossible objects, invented maps, landscapes and anagrammatic poetry with mathematical diagrams. One comes across an abstracted reflection of 80s locality, world politics, obsession with the American dream, an isolated emotional darkness but also a universal landscape. A chance encounter of Marina Xenofontos with this game catalysed a strong fascination that led to the uncovering of his archive. This publication, a part of Xenofontos’ practice-based research, brings to the fore the rich universe of Kyriakides’ personal symbolism that shecreatively harnesses as a means of an alternative, atypical handling and systematisation of themes and issues that she finds affinities with.

Vahagn Hamalbashyan lässt sich von Dingen inspirieren, die ihn beschäftigen, sei es seine diabeteskranke Großmutter oder das internationale Geschehen. Er sieht sich als Weltbürger und Armenier zugleich, und seine Kunst gibt ihm die Möglichkeit, an einem internationalen Dialog teilzunehmen. Auf lokaler Ebene findet er sich inmitten der Bildung eines neuen Eisernen Vorhangs wieder. Er lehnt die Rückkehr Armeniens zur schwierigen Realität der Sowjetunion aus mehreren Gründen entschieden ab: das hohe Maß an Korruption in allen Bereichen der Regierung, der Mangel an zugewiesenen Ressourcen für die breite Öffentlichkeit und die unterdrückte Mentalität des Lebens im Allgemeinen. Vahagn verwendet als Hauptinstrumente Pinsel, Acrylfarbe und Leinwand. Er bedient sich auch eines Druckers, Bleistiften, Kohle, Aquarellfarben, Sprühdosen, Schablonen und armenischen Weins. "Wenn es um die emotionale Kommunikation mit der Welt geht, halte ich mich nicht zurück", sagt er. Eines seiner in Arbeit befindlichen Werke verkörpert die selbstgefällige Haltung gegenüber einer sich abzeichnenden Katastrophe. Es zeigt eine Atomexplosion über einem Strand, an dem Köpfe schweben und Eiscreme essen. In einem anderen Werk, The Visit of Big Brother, beherrscht ein russischer Flugzeugträger einen See, genauer gesagt den Sewansee, während nackte Menschen sich entspannen und das Flugzeug betrachten, aber nichts gegen die lauernde Gefahr unternehmen. Das Heft war Teil der Ausstellung "Fusion is Future" von 2016 der Artos Foundation. Unser Motto "do-it-together" wörtlich nehmend, drehen sich die diesjährigen Bühnen um die Idee der Kollektivität und deren Nachhaltigkeit.
Seva-Bühne:
"Seva" ist ein Wort aus dem Sanskrit und bedeutet selbstloser Dienst, d. h. eine Arbeit zu verrichten, ohne eine Belohnung zu erwarten. Man glaubte, dass dies zur Verbesserung des Gemeinschaftsgefühls beiträgt.
Da wir experimentierfreudig sind, haben wir uns die Struktur eines Festivalprogramms angesehen, die zwangsläufig immer hierarchisch ist, und beschlossen, dass die Künstler ihre eigene Bühne für den Freitag selbst organisieren und kuratieren sollen. Wir laden Sie ein, aufgeschlossen zu sein und zu sehen, wie sich das Musikrepertoire entfaltet. Für die Bühne selbst haben wir mit dem Künstler Peter Eramian zusammengearbeitet, und die Künstler, die auf ihr auftreten werden, haben wochenlang in der Erde gegraben. Dies führte auch zu ihrer Namensgebung, Seva-Bühne.

Nach dem letztjährigen Gathering hatten wir alle das Gefühl, dass die Bühne am Fluss ideal für einen ausgedehnten Rave wäre. Mit Blick auf die Umgebung wollten wir eine Bühne bauen, die nachhaltig ist, ohne in die natürliche Umgebung einzugreifen. So entstand in Zusammenarbeit mit der Architektin Penelope Vasquez Hadjilyra die River Stage, auf der all unsere DJs von Samstagmorgen bis zum späten Sonntagnachmittag für einen konstanten Sound sorgen werden.
Die beiden Bühnen befruchten sich gegenseitig und wir laden Sie ein, beide im Laufe des Wochenendes abwechselnd zu erleben, mit Spaziergängen am Tamassos-See und unseren Chill-Out-Bereichen.

Katrin von Lehmann verflicht in Streifen zerschnittene Fotos zu neuen Bildern, die die Abbildhaftigkeit der Fotografie in Frage stellen. Dorothea Reese-Heim stellt aus modernsten synthetischen Metall- und Kunststoffgeweben transparente Formen her, die der belebten Natur nachempfunden sind. Brigitte Schwacke schafft aus ge- und umbogenen Drähten zarte dreidimensionale Gespinste, die frei im Raum schweben. Auch Monika Supé arbeitet mit Draht, verhäkelt diesen aber zu Kopfbedeckungen und Körperhüllen, die ganz eigenständige Formen entwickeln. Peter Weber schließlich täuscht Gewebe nur vor, denn bei seinen reliefartigen Filzobjekten handelt es sich um kunstvolle Faltungen. So entfaltet die Ausstellung ein Spektrum von verschiedenen Kunst-Geweben zwischen Bild und Raum.

´Amerika´, also known as ´Der Verschollene´ or ´The Man Who Disappeared´, was the incomplete first novel by Franz Kafka, published posthumously in 1927.
The story describes the bizarre wanderings of a sixteen-year-old European emigrant named Karl Rossmann in the United States, who was forced to go to New York to escape the scandal of his seduction by a housemaid.
Hope originates when something else is absent and holes need to be filled again. The purpose of hope is to make itself vanish again and to reach a state of mind where Utopia or the promised land of North America won´t be needed anymore.
Kafka puts his hero Karl Rossmann over and over again in situations where he is lacking something only to discover that he is lacking even more. The spiral of hope, disappointment and reproaches seems to be endless. With ´Amerika´ Kafka finishes a series of America-fiction from the 19. Century which glorified the United States as the land of boundless possibilities. For Kafka America is not the solution of our problems anymore, it is almost like a second Europe - a land where the problems stay the same.

That eternal energy that generated the first beginning, the early morning of all time, for Simona has to do with an explosion: the fire, linked to the Latin verb foveo and to the Greek words φῶς (phos), light. Imploded energy, the Genesis of all moments. It is with one of the simplest destruction tools, the Molotov bomb, that the artist opens her personal exhibition, where an explosion accompanies us on a journey that with great delicacy investigates the boundaries of human exploration, in its higher sense. That man who wants to know, measure, ennoble. How much space does the highest point of the Earth occupy? "I asked Silvio Mondinelli, the sixth mountaineer in the world to have climbed all fourteen of the eight-thousand of the Himalayan chain, (without the help of oxygen) to recover through memory the space of the summit of Everest. He traced its perimeter in 1: 1 scale on a piece of paper" says Simona. This perimeter was used as a template to create a marble base, where Silvio Mondinelli’s signs and writings make that memory immortal in the most faithful way possible. In that memory, Francesco Šljiva Venturi gives life to a primordial sound that once again seeks a point of contact with the origin, through the use of his voice and a single instrument: a shamanic drum, purpose-built by a craftsman for the performance.
He will climb "on the top of Mount Everest" to sing a variation of Ives' Unanswered Question, in the lowest possible pitch. It is the elaboration of an impossibility: to go as high as possible while going as low as possible.

This little book is made from my collection of photos downloaded from various sex related business websites in Japan. I worked in this kind of company to pay for my art studies. These jobs are mentally and physically heavy. But the high pay prevents most of us from quitting before their health is damaged.
The images are transformed through several processes using inkjet printers to make visible these physical and mental damages, the fatigues and the pains, that hide behind the seductive poses and smiles of the people in the photos. The book is printed on an incompatible paper with my printer, so that the images are ephemeral and fragile like as our body.

Volume 6 of the series For Everard celebrates the life of a remarkable musical prodigy, Yosef Synovec. This zine tells the story of a young man with great aspirations who emigrated to the United States from Czechoslovakia to study classical violin. In 1976, Holly Woodlawn overheard Synovec vocalizing as he was painting the bathroom of his East Village apartment, and determined on the spot that she had discovered an emerging star. As a singer, Synovec used his extreme vocal range to imitate the voice and persona of Peruvian diva Yma Sumac. He performed Sumac’s exotic musical numbers at several New York City cabarets and show venues. Sadly, on May 25, 1977, Yosef perished in the tragic fire at the Everard Baths.

This zine brings together images and stories from the life of Tony Calarco, one of the nine men who died in the fire at the Everard Baths in 1977. Tony was only 26 when he died. He lived with his parents and siblings in a modest house in the Bronx. He had recently graduated from college and was working as a social worker in New York city at the time of his death. Tony had aspirations to become a lawyer and was scheduled to begin law school in September of 1977. This zine celebrates Tony Calarco’s memory through photos of Tony, artifacts from his high school and college years, and recent photographs of his home and final resting place.

Amado Alamo, a young man only 17 years old, lost his life in the fire at the Everard Baths in 1977. In Volume 8 of For Everard, Anthony Malone documents his search for the identity of the youngest victim of the Everard fire. The zine is an abstracted portrait of Alamo that assembles the few extant fragments of his story culled from newspaper articles and documentary sources glued together with the artist’s imagination.

Life was difficult for Hillman Wesley Adams. He was born in Jacksonville FL in 1938. His mother died just a few months after his birth, and by the age of nine, he found himself in an orphanage with his older brother. Fast forward 30 years: Hillman moved to NYC, struggled to make ends meet while working on and off as a bartender, and he met his lover, Ralph, with whom he shared a modest apartment in New Jersey. On May 25, 1977, Hillman died in the fire at the Everard Baths. Vol. 9 of For Everard is an assemblage of newspaper articles and vintage photos chronicling the life and untimely death of Hillman Wesley Adams.

Volume 10 of For Everard memorializes the life of Patrick Nott, one of the nine men who died in the fire at the Everard Baths. Nott, a native of Wales with a passion for theater, literature, and music, pursued a successful career in hairdressing. He fell in love with his pen pal (a young woman from Brooklyn) and after their marriage, they moved to New York City, where Nott worked at the Vidal Sassoon Salon. This zine weaves together elements from his story (shared with the artist by Patrick Nott’s wife), with photographs, newspaper clippings, and artifacts. It acts as a humble tribute, an “In Memoriam” for this greatly loved man.
For Everard, Vol. 11 (Thunderbird), 2019, ed. 100 (Nr. 79)
Brian Duffy was an aspiring artist. In 1966 he was accepted to Pratt Institute of Art and although he declined admission to the school, he seized the opportunity to move to NYC and start a new life for himself. In the city, he worked hard at various retail jobs and tried to break into the theater, but everything changed when he met the love of his life, Bradley. The couple moved to a “quieter life” in Boston. They worked in restaurants in the Back Bay area and created a community for themselves amongst their chosen family of friends. Volume 11 of For Everard celebrates the brief life of Brian Duffy, a young man who died in the fire at the Everard Baths in 1977. This zine compiles photographs and stories shared with Malone by Brian’s sister and dear friend.
The pseudonym "Anthony Malone" comes from a novel by Andrew Holleran (Dancer from the Dance). In this novel, Malone is the protagonist and at the end he disappears. Some of his friends believe that he may have committed suicide, others feel that he may have run away from New York, while some say that they saw him at the Everard Baths on the night of the fire. I imagine that Malone survived the fire and he is now making books and zines telling the story of the tragedy.

Stijn Jonckheere (°1989) recieved his MA in explorative architectural development in 2012. While working as an architect his personal work gained traction, sparking his career as a visual artist. Monochrome yet visually tense, his work revolves around the themes of memory and alternative reality. Contrasting their minimalistic composition, his drawings often contain a more complex message, presenting a critical look at social behaviour within our built environment. Exhibited throughout Europe and featured in publications worldwide, Jonckheere subsequently ventured into teaching by means of his digital design masterclass and lectures given across architecture universities. He has lent his creative vision to a wide spectrum of projects, ranging from architecture to advertisement for both start-ups and high-profile clients. Jonckheere currently resides in Munich, where he is Art Director at a leading brand activation agency.

His mustache looked like it would tickle. That’s probably the only reason why I didn’t want to kiss him.
He was a weirdo, but not weird enough, if you know what I mean. He certainly had a flair for details. It wasn’t that. I mean, it’s not like he was wearing a mullet, no. Nor like the kind of guy to gift me a Chinatown Gucci bag. He hated scented soaps and he’d drag me out of any decent party if he found scenty sticks near the toilet. That kind of thing drove him nuts. It’s not like he had anything against grapefruit.
Early on in our friendship, he gave me a box of Gioconda pencils from Koh-I-Noor. He knew how to get me hooked. But that damn mustache. It was so thick, so neatly trimmed. He paid too much attention to the kind of things I didn’t want to pay attention to. The cappuccino foam in it, however, was a kind of turn-on.
This is no doubt why you are holding this book in your hands. His mustache, right? Admit it. It’s the bowl of bonbons by the register. But then you go undercover, under the sheets to find a lot of nudity, thwarted porn. Ja, ja, ja: bodies. Corporeality. Corporation, cooperation. Protest. Violence. Religion. Collage. A torn sheet at the back. A misbound book? A defect or just vulnerable?
Selbsthilfe ist auch keine Lösung (even self-help is not a solution) and Protestvorbild Frankreich (protest “role model” in France?) is the only text you can make out other than mine. You’re meant to struggle to read it, or maybe Erik (who has no mustache) was being intentionally casual about the way he cut out these pictures. It’s an awareness of being sloppy that is so aware, it’s no longer sloppy. A man standing with his fist held high. He’s standing in the window frame of an apartment at least one story up from the ground. He is forty and mad and he enjoys his Bud. His form of protest is a form of solidarity from the sofa. A window protest: comfy. So fucking clever. Then there’s the picture abutting it of a woman holding out her bra. We are meant to take it. She’s offering it to us. Go ahead. She wants you to.
And then there’s the spooning bodies with their tube socks in a wad next to… a bed. A solar bed. You got it? This book is brown sugar. Stinky Swiss cheese. Bad, bad, good, good.

Reinhard Grüner is a collector from Monaco. His passion is art books, which he collects – and sometimes exhibits – since the 1960s.
His website, www.buchkunst.info is a real “online museum”, where international artist books are catalogued and photographed. Amongst the artists there are Marc Chagall, Anselm Kiefer, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol. Books, but also works of art made of images and text, created by the artist often in collaboration with a writer and a publisher. For the high artistic quality – original graphics, unique designs, paintings and collages – these works are different from the usual picture books. Their manifestations are multiple: books with graphic effects, objects-book, artist’s books, sometimes printed in offset or illustrated by works of artists.
At the centre of Grüner’s attention there are Eastern German and Eastern European books (mainly Russia, Hungary, Lithuania). many of these works were created in response to specific social, political and cultural issues, with unimaginable insights into the culture of modernity.
Reinhard first came in contact with the art in book form with the English Edition, printed privately, of “A Dissertation Upon Roast Pig”, printed in 1975 by Shoestring Press on paper of the legendary Chiswick Press: from here begins a life of a book maniac among thousands of books. As Grüner states in an essay, the acquisition of artist books is more than a simple purchase: the artist, the life as a collector and thoughts are tied together, they influence each other, and a network of contacts with other collectors begins. With nearly all the books in his collection Grüner forms a symbiotic relationship: each of them describes, explains, and gets to the heart of some chapters of his life.

Onomatopee 95. 11”x17” by Elisa van Joolen is an on-going project that examines and challenges the fashion industry’s prevailing value systems and proposes new methods of production. The project began in 2013 with a series of conversations with representatives of various fashion brands including G-Star, O’Neill, gsus sindustries, Rockwell by Parra, Converse, moniquevanheist, and Nike. These companies then contributed by donating clothing and footwear in the form of samples, archival pieces and stock. A selection of these, complemented with pieces of second-hand and no-brand clothing have undergone a process of cutting out and reconstructing to become 11”x17” Sweaters and Invert Footwear. 11”x17” creates a network. It unites different categories of clothing and different values within fashion. an eclectic mixture of mid-market, second-hand, and high-end items.

KALAS ist ein Fake der CARAS-Reihe, der größten kolumbianischen Publikation im Bereich Lebensstil und Gesellschaft, die immer mit Glanz, Eleganz und Eleganz verbunden ist.
