Open by Chance & Appointment est la formule affichée depuis quelques années sur la vitrine de la librairie de Ben Kinmont, ouverte en 1998 et installée à partir de 2003 à Sébastopol en Californie. Pour l’artiste, cette activité commerciale s'inscrit dans un projet artistique intitulé "Sometimes a nicer sculpture is to be able to provide a living for your family" (Parfois, une sculpture est d’autant plus belle qu’elle permet à ta famille de subsister) : "J’ai commencé une activité commerciale d’antiquaire de livres anciens pour aider matériellement ma famille. L’œuvre n’est pas l'entreprise elle-même, mais sa contribution au coût de notre vie. Comme la librairie est spécialisée dans les livres sur l’alimentation et le vin avant 1840, elle offre aussi un plus large contexte dans lequel on peut considérer l’activité domestique comme signifiante. Jusqu’à présent, ça a été un succès."

12 May 2011 is the 90th anniversary of the birth of Joseph Beuys (1921-1986), one of the key figures in the artistic scenario of the last century. The Kunsthaus in Zurich is paying tribute to the German master by staging an important international event that forms an integral part of the exhibition entitled “Joseph Beuys – Difesa della Natura” (Joseph Beuys – Defense of Nature), curated by Lucrezia De Domizio Durini and Tobia Bezzola. This book marking the birthday of this German painter and sculptor, who was one of the most authoritative and innovative voices of post-war society, is also being published in English and German. The book, about 1,000 pages long, containing more than 200 illustrations from the historical archive of De Domizio Durini, describes the Living Sculpture which made Beuys famous, together with the historical background that is fundamental to comprehending his thinking and work.

Dear Viewer, dear Reader,
the following issue of what remains gallery magazine focuses the artist´s role and his work through the lense of a public imagery and the needs of a visual culture. The series wants to sharpen the focus on different aspects of an exposure to art and its objects. The changing scenes and actions are taking place impromptu and exemplify the limits of control from an artists perspective, when a piece of art gets abandoned and the idea of originality gets fostered. The perspectives on the scenarios are fully invented and have nothing to do with any form of reality.
Der Inhalt bezieht sich auf diverse Kunstwerke aus den Jahren 2004 bis 2015.

Begleitmaterial zur gleichnamigen Ausstellung im Kunsthof Zürich vom 15.09.2009-16.01.2010.
Das Künstlerbuch trägt den Titel "Starker Tobak". Der alte, rauchige VW-Bus ist Protagonist in einem Roadmovie von Berlin nach Zürich, „living Sculpture", Freiluftakademie und gleichzeitig der Eckpfeiler bei der Gründung eines Freundeskreises. Im Bus gibt es ein eingebautes Bett und der ursprüngliche Plan sieht vor, von Zeit zu Zeit über Nacht dort zu schlafen.
Auf dem Plakat ist die Installation "Strand Penner" und rückseitig der Text "Berlin-Zürich und zurück" abgedruckt.
Auf der Postkarte ist die "Dozentenpalme" abgebildet.
Erik Steinbrecher (1963) ist ein Schweizer Künstler, der in einem interdisziplinären Format, in erster Linie mit Plastiken, architektonischen Interventionen, Installationen, Fotografie und Video, sowie Künstlerbücher arbeitet. Er wohnt in Berlin.
