For Comma 38, artist and publisher Arnaud Desjardin will exhibit new, old, rare, and popular books while running an active printing press in Bloomberg Space. His COMMA commission, part of an ongoing project titled The Book on Books on Artists' Books, is intended to create an active and participatory review of current and historical practice. This exhibition is about both the display of books on artists' books and the production of a book about the books displayed. He intends to print a first edition, a book of books, a critical anthology and source book, alongside which a large range of books on artists' books will be displayed in a series of vitrines.
Artists' books have normally been sold and distributed through small networks of bookshops and galleries that often produce lists of available titles in printed form. The advent of the Internet has meant that information online has changed the nature of this documentary evidence. Desjardin's unique and extraordinary combination of display and production makes an exhibition that actively engages in both the making and disseminating in real time. The books themselves become both vehicles for information and documents that testify for artistic activity in its own right

The New Art Practice was a term created for a generation of artists in the former Yugoslavia active in the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s. These artists shifted their practice to spaces outside the traditional studio, onto city streets, into artist-run spaces, and in multimedia performances and experimental publications. Focusing on artists working in the city of Zagreb, this exhibition documents aspects of this shift and highlights the ability of artists' publications to record these often ephemeral gestures and ideas. While artists such as Goran Trbuljak, Braco Dimitrijević, Sanja Iveković, Mladen Stilinović, and Vlado Martek, among others, worked in a variety of mediums, they shared a common impulse to produce publications. These artists questioned and played with ideas about the place of an artist within this particular political and socioeconomic context. Their work often involved public participation and blurred traditional notions of authorship through collective activities, chance operations, and the appropriation of language and imagery from the state and commercial media. The materials in this installation resonate with other contemporaneous scenes in Eastern and Central Europe and with broader international trends, while also providing an insight into very local networks of experimental artists and writers in Zagreb. All materials are drawn from the collection of the Museum of Modern Art Library.

This survey of experimental art and design magazines published since 2000 explores the various ways in which contemporary artists and designers utilize the magazine format as an experimental space for the presentation of artworks and text. Throughout the 20th century, international avant-garde activities in the visual arts and design were often codified first in the informal context of a magazine or journal. This exhibition, drawn from the holdings of the MoMA Library, follows the practice into the 21st century. The works on view represent a broad array of international titles within this genre, from community-building newspapers to image-only photography magazines to conceptual design projects. The contents illustrate a diverse range of image-making, editing, design, printing, and distribution practices. There are obvious connections to the past lineage of artists’ magazines and little architecture and design magazines of the 20th century, as well as a clear sense of the application of new techniques of image-editing and printing methods. Assembled together, these contemporary magazines provide a first-hand view into these practices and represents the MoMA Library’s sustained effort to document and collect this medium.

Morris’ new bookwork, Getting Inside Jack Kerouac’s Head, is a performative retyping of the recently published original scroll edition of Jack Kerouac’s beat classic, On the Road. Morris’ project first appeared as an ongoing journey through the book, read and re-typed on a WordPress blog one page per day. This newly published codex version pours the content of that performative retyping back into the format of the paperback source book. It follows the default logic of a blog archive to put the last post, page at the start and stores the rest of the entries in reverse order. In other words, whereas Kerouac traveled from the East coast to the West coast, Morris crosses America from West to East.

Ink used for digital printing is one of the most precious substances in the world. A single gallon of ink costs over four thousand dollars and this is one reason why digitally printed books are so expensive.

The beach is located within the British Western Sovereign Base Area, one of two territories (the other being Dhekelia) controversially retained by the British under the 1960 treaty of independence. Christo & Jeanne-Claude komplettierten am 12.02.2005 im New Yorker Central Park ihr monumentales Projekt The Gates: 7.500 leuchtend safranfarbene Tore auf 37 km Parkwegen. Freihängende Gewebebahnen in jedem Tor wehten bei leichtem Wind bis an das nächstliegende Tor. Das monumentale Vorhaben wurde erstmals 1979 konzipiert, finanziert wurden The Gates allein vom Künstlerpaar selbst und deren C.V.J. Corporation. Das Kunstwerk war zeitlich begrenzt: 16 Tage lang waren die 7.500 Tore im Central Park für jedermann zu sehen, danach wurde die Installation wieder abgebaut und alle Materialien wurden recycelt.

Bast Fooks was one of my new years resolutions for 2016. I haven’t given up smoking yet, but I did end up spending my new years eve in, printing and sewing the first Bast Fook issue. There and then I had decided that it would be a project in 12 parts and that I would produce a book for each month of 2016. Each Bast Fook is a repository of ideas (in the form of notes, thoughts, readings and misreadings, assumptions, aphorisms, contemplations, stories, lists, observations and lost projects). Bast Fooks have evolved into a platform through which, I can organise - in a pretty disorganised way-ideas as they happen and material produced in different ways, under different circumstances, at different places and times and sometimes by totally different versions of myself. Bast Fook is an anagram of Fast Book and in a way each issue is offering a slow consumption of a fastness that often reads a lot like a facebook newsfeed, decentered, fragmented, multivoiced.

Das Ausstellungsprojekt „Pacific Standard Time – Kunst in Los Angeles 1950-1980“ zeigt Entwicklungsprozesse der Kunstszene im Los Angeles der Nachkriegszeit. Die Stadt am Pazifik zeigt eine beeindruckend vielfältige und äußerst agile West-Coast-Kunstszene. Sie belegt damit, dass sie mehr ist als Hollywood und eine große Stadt im Land der Sonne und der Palmen. „Pacific Standard Time“ lenkt den Blick auf international vielbeachtete Künstler wie John Baldessari, David Hockney, Edward Kienholz oder Ed Ruscha als auch auf weniger bekannte Protagonisten wie die abstrakten Maler Helen Lundeberg und Karl Benjamin, Keramiker wie Ken Price oder John Mason oder Bildhauer wie De Wain Valentine.
Die Megaschau – in Los Angeles waren über 60 Institutionen und Galerien beteiligt – kommt mit den beiden wichtigsten Kernausstellungen des Getty Museum und Getty Research Institute nach Europa. Einzige europäische Station ist der Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin.
Jener Ausstellungsteil, der in Los Angeles im Getty-Museum unter dem Titel „Crosscurrents in L.A. - Painting and Sculpture 1950-1970“ zu sehen war, präsentiert Malerei und Skulptur. Im zweiten Teil, in Los Angeles zu sehen unter dem Titel „Greetings from L.A. – Artists and Publics 1950-1980“, werden Poster, Künstlerkataloge, Postkarten, Einladungskarten, und andere Memorabilia gezeigt, die einen tieferen Einblick in die Netzwerke der Kunstszene jener Zeit in Los Angeles erlauben. Für Berlin wird die Schau um Fotografien von Julius Shulman ergänzt. Seine Architekturaufnahmen prägten in den 1950 Jahren entscheidend das Bild des kalifornischen Lebensstils. Seine Sensibilität, sein intuitiver und unvergleichlicher Sinn für Komposition und den „entscheidenden Augenblick“ brachten ihm den Ruf eines Meisters seines Faches ein.

In der DDR wurde bis zu 80 Prozent ihres Lohnes abgezogen und als Rentenzahlung nach Mosambik geschickt – das Geld sollten sie nach ihrer Rückkehr erhalten. Die Regierung hält sie hin, scheint den Konflikt aussitzen zu wollen. "Wir wollten eine kleine Feier machen. Es wäre einfach. Es gibt eine große Kirche, gleich hier. Wir könnten uns 200 Stühle leihen. Wir könnten eine Kuh schlachten, etwas braten und ein paar Bierchen trinken. Aber leider: Nur die Deutschen können diesen Tag feiern. Wir haben überhaupt keinen Grund zu feiern", sagt der Präsident der "wütenden Deutschen" José Alfredo Cossa am 9. November 2009 in perfektem Deutsch an der "Base Central Madgermany" in Maputo.

Since the early 1970s Hamish Fulton (born 1946) has been labelled as a sculptor, photographer, Conceptual artist and Land artist. Fulton, however, characterises himself as a 'walking artist'. In 1973, having walked 1,022 miles in 47 days from Duncansby Head (near John O'Groats) to Lands End, Fulton decided to 'only make art resulting from the experience of individual walks.' Since then the act of walking has remained central to Fulton's practice. He has stated 'If I do not walk, I cannot make a work of art' and has summed up this way of thinking in the simple statement of intent: 'no walk, no work'. Although only Fulton experiences the walk itself, the texts and photographs he presents in exhibitions and books allow us to engage with his experience.

I’m a young illustrator currently moored on the Thames in my houseboat. Working from my home studio I like to draw in a variety of mediums, more recently focusing on vector graphics. I enjoy the fast paced nature of vectors, which allows me to capture vivid ideas in a hopefully bold, interesting and thought provoking manner. Working regardless of brief I like to continue to produce a body of work to satisfy my creative habits. This has led to sharing daily drawings online via Instagram, which is a great platform to discover and meet other creatives. I have had the honour of working with some fantastic individuals over the past year, which I try to share online via my website. This September I plan to go to Central Saint Martins to further my studies, devote my time to and produce more art! I’m looking forward to all that this opportunity has to offer.

Rage, Heal, Root, Grow is a celebration of the chaos and complexity of life and one person’s process of adapting to it. Johnson’s postpartum years were challenging. She was fearful of what she saw happening—that she was disappearing as her male partner was becoming more visible. She struggled to find the time and space necessary to heal her body, and to reconcile the intense inequity of a child-rearing partnership when one partner (her) was nursing. A unique postpartum tale that refuses the female body as its central character. In its place: that body’s voice, and the bespoke flotsam of daily life.
Rage, Heal, Root, Grow was created on a shared Risograph duplicator over many months while Johnson’s child slept in a stroller nearby. She scanned and printed drawings they had made together with markers, watercolors, crayons, pencils, and lots of stamps into symphonic six-color prints. A narrative text describes her experience of raging, healing, rooting herself, and subsequently growing in a new direction.

The mid-1960s witnessed a boom in underground and selfpublished works. Hectographs, mimeographs, and offset printing not only allowed for the production of small, lowcost print runs but also promote a unique aesthetic: using wild mock-ups, »messianic amateurs« combined typescript aesthetics, handwriting, scribbled drawings, assemblages of collaged visuals, porn photos, snapshots, and comic
strips. The typography consciously frees itself, in parallel to a liberalization of linguistic and visual forms of expression in the name of a new »sensibility«.
This book (which appears in conjunction with an exhibition at the Weserburg in Bremen) is the first to present the underground and self-published works that came out of West Germany in such depth, while also showing the internationalcontext in which they emerged: not as an anecdotal history but as an attempt to tap into the aesthetic cosmos of a Do-It-Yourself rebellion, one that also challenges us to take a new look at the current boom in »independent publishing«, the risograph aesthetic, and so on.

BAU was founded in 2004 in Viareggio, on the coast of Tuscany, by a group of artists and individuals interested in the many-sided aspects of the culture of our times. Thanks to a widespread and constantly expanding network of contacts, every year the project takes the shape of an expressly designed UniA4 sized box: BAU container of contemporary culture. This non-profit box is produced in a limited edition of 150 copies (120 for issue 1 and 200 for issues 9-10) and contains original works, signed and numbered, from a large number of international contributors.
The BAU container fits in the vast tradition of assembling publications and artists‘ magazines that developed since the early sixties. It intends to experiment with new languages, technologies and materials, operating in a peculiar dimension of group work that is open also to contributions from non-artists: outsiders, travellers, collectors of curiosities, creative gastronomers, anomalous scientists.
In a relational and non competitive perspective that is responsive to the relationships between art and science, politics and environment, BAU acts as a meeting point in order to stimulate dialogues, interactions and exchanges among the most diverse disciplines: graphics, collage, photography and the visual arts in general, but also poetical and narrative researches, acoustic and performative experiences, documents pertaining the fields of fashion and design, etc. The operative network expresses itself also through the planning of exhibitions, meetings, festivals and events, organized in institutional spaces (libraries, galleries, museums) and in atypic locations.

Natürlich taucht das Bärtierchen auch im musikalischen Pendant zur Installation wieder auf. Am 27.06.2020, zeitgleich zur Ausstellungseröffnung (im Apartment der Kunst, München), veröffentlicht Delfrati sein Debütalbum Beresheet, „eine elektronische Geschichte in fünf Akten“. Jedem dieser fünf Kapitel liegt eine Emotion zugrunde (Verzweiflung, Wut, Resignation, Ehrgeiz, Akzeptanz), die den Wahlmünchner überkommt, wenn er an ungreifbare Dinge wie den Klimawandel, Massensterben oder das Internet denkt, also Konzepte, die Zeit, Raum und das Vorstellungsvermögen des Menschen weit übersteigen. „Hyperobjekte“ nennt der US-amerikanische Philosoph Timothy Morton solche Konzepte und Delfratis Theorie zufolge könnten auch Bärtierchen als solche „Hyperobjekte“ gelten. So widmet er Morton den Album-Opener.

The following document tries to be an object of reflection, and the same time, a file for the posterity, as this precise digital era raises doubts about the sustainability of our culture over time that is to come, and the intangibility of it. With this document we capture the past in order to project it into the future. Based on a series of temporary parameters (pictures uploaded in the last 24 hours) and a format (black and white photography, medium size) we extract the following pictures to create the photographic alphabet of Google Images. This confirms the initial concept; the documentation which is exhibited here never again belonged to the momentary alphabet on the 3th of December in the present year, so we manage to capture the present (already the past as you read these precise words) and we leave it physically alive in the future, making the common belief of printing as old fashioned and didgital as actual lose its sense, finding the way to make contemporary, in other words, tangible or visible today, something which doesn't exist on the web anymore."

This publication is the result of a warm exchange between Public Collectors and Eric Schierloh of the press Barba de Abejas, (Beard of Bees).
In 2020 Eric wrote this essay that he translated into English with an American friend, Paul Paul Holzman, who also lives in Buenos Aires. In December 2021, Eric reached out to me to share his enthusiasm for my text “Towards a Self Sustaining Publishing Model.” Eric proposed making a Spanish translation and publishing my writing as a cheap edition in Argentina. He felt my text had similarities to his own words; the two works share a similar spirit of encouraging publishing experimentation outside of typically limiting market constraints.
Though Eric’s text had already been published in English in World Literature Today magazine and translated into French by the cardboard press La Liebre Dorada, we agreed that it could still be worthwhile to make a US edition that stood alone. So, in a celebration of artist publishing exchanges, Public Collectors is happy to share Eric Schierloh’s inspiring writing. It provides many potential creative paths forward for people with access to any form of printing, and any materials that could be used to make a book.
