    Un coup de dés jamais n’abolira le hasard, A Throw of the Dice will Never Abolish Chance (Sculpture) is a close copy of the 1914 edition of the French symbolist poet Stéphane Mallarmé’s poem of the same name, but with all the words cut out by laser, in a way that corresponds directly to the typographic layout used by Mallarmé to articulate the text.
    A Preface features the entire poem written as a block of text with each line separated by a slash (, ). This block-transcription of the Mallarme-Text was carried out 1969 by Broodthaers. 12 double spreads follow, with immaculately cut out windows standing in for the text. When turning the pages, numerous shadows are being generated by the cutouts.

  • The publication Spheres is the creative documentation of a close collaboration between an artist and the editor, graphic designer Philippe Karrer.     Jacob invites us into an intimate space that serves as a shelter for a nomadic subject, the pilgrim. Free of any territorial attachment, this figure sets out on a devotional journey, motivated by the desire to seek the sacred. Thus, the pilgrim wanders into inhospitable lands, submitting himself to absolute isolation. A solitary exodus towards uncertainty, far away from the worldly, from society, and in a way, from the self. This figure of the pilgrim becomes the leitmotiv of Jacob’s work - its isolation, loss of identity, but also, its vitality. Concepts which she also invokes in her intuitive drawings, that are aesthetically close to Art Brut. "The Room of the Pilgrim" explores the liberty and emancipation that arises from this retreat. In that way, the abandoned refuge built by Jacob speaks of lost rights. The rights to anonymity and intimacy being some of the most recently expropriated and commodified values.

This series, at the same time, documents the cultural diversity that exists between different cities and countries: Guadalajara, Spain; Philadelphia, USA; Pirkanmaa, Finland and Leyte, Philippines.     This project looks at the poster campaigns of the 2007 French presidential elections, attempting to reveal what lies behind the semiotic construction of the messages. In the 10 days between the 2 rounds of the elections, Waeckerle took close up photographs of the 12 posters displayed in every town square in France, ending up with around 60 fragments of smiles, eyes, slogans and textures. These deconstructions display new banners, political candidates, and slogans in this artists' book.

    Der amerikanische Jungautor Jonathan Safran Foer hat in seinem neuesten Roman den Angriff auf das World Trade Centre verarbeitet, und er hat daraus eine Geschichte der "Beschädigten" gemacht, konstatiert Tilman Urbach. Foer lässt den 9-jährigen Oskar auf der Suche nach Antworten zum sinnlosen Tod seines Vater durch New York ziehen und verbindet den 11. September mit den Bombennächten von Dresden im Schicksal der Großeltern des Jungen, erklärt der Rezensent die "riskante" Konstruktion des Romans. Das Buch sei "Detektivroman, Fotoband und Belletristik" in einem und mische in guter "postmoderner Manier" Perspektiven, Zeitebenen und Erzählweisen, so der Rezensent durchaus beeindruckt. Am gelungensten findet Urbach die Passagen, in denen Oskar durch New York streift und verschiedenen Menschen begegnet. Hier finden sich "fein geschilderte" Beobachtungen und die Stadt gewinnt in der Beschreibung "Kontur", lobt der Rezensent. Weniger überzeugend dagegen findet er die Schilderungen aus dem Europa der 30er und 40er Jahren, sie bleiben, wie er moniert, "blass". Urbach scheint zwar insbesondere die Verbindung des 11. September mit den Bombenangriffen auf Dresden im Zweiten Weltkrieg "weltanschaulich und ästhetisch fragwürdig", trotzdem kann er nicht umhin, Foer für die "bunte Simultaneität", die er in seinem Roman evoziert, "Respekt" zu zollen.

    Das Thema ist: Fremdheit. Beim Begriff der Fremdheit wird oft an die „Anderen“ gedacht. In dieser Hinsicht wird sie als das Gegenstück zum Eigenem, zum Vertrauten aufgefasst. Doch bei Fremdheit geht es um vielmehr als nur die Markierung von Differenzen – sie deutet aus soziologischer Perspektive die Ambivalenz der modernen Gesellschaft an: auf der einen Seite zugehörig zu sein, aber sich nie ganz zugehörig zu fühlen. Frei zu sein, aber „neben sich zu stehen“ – alles erscheint möglich, aber eben auch ersetzbar. Fremdheitserfahrungen stehen insofern in Bezug mit Nähe und Distanz, mit Innen und Außen, mit Uneindeutigkeit und (De-)Konstruktion von Identität und Repräsentation.

    "Thinking Machine", so nenne ich meine Konstruktion aus drei sich drehenden Scheiben mit jeweils etwa 50 Adjektiven und Substantiven. Seit 2008 drehe ich die Scheiben regelmäßig, bevor ich das Haus verlasse. Die daraus resultierende Wortkombination begleitet mich den ganzen Tag und dient mir so als Grundlage für die Visualisierung in einem Foto, einer Aktion, einem Video oder der Beschreibung einer Situation.
