Der deutsche Mail Artist Klaus Groh bemühte sich frühzeitig, südafrikanische Künstler über seine Mail Art-Zeitschrift IAC-Info zu erreichen. Ein anderer deutscher Künstler, Volker Hamann, knüpfte Verbindungen nach Ghana und Südafrika. Hamann organisierte auch zwei der frühesten afrikanischen Mail Art-Ausstellungen in Accra, Ghana und Lagos, Nigeria. Aber es war der afrikanische Mail Artist und Journalist Ayah Okwabi, der die führende Rolle dabei spielte, afrikanische Bürger in das weltweite Netzwerk einzubeziehen. Okwabi unternahm 1987 schrittweise Versuche, Afrika mit dem Mail Art-Netz zu verbinden, mit Africa Arise and Talk with the World und 1994 mit Women in Africa. Im März 1992 fand in der Voluntary Workcamps Association of Ghana (VOLU) der African Mutant Congress von Ayah Okwabi statt. 1985 verteilten südafrikanische Künstler illegale Anti-Apartheid Künstler-Briefmarken, die von Chuck Welch zur Verteilung geschaffen wurden.

Kéré has completed numerous projects both in Africa and beyond, including schools, medical centres, cultural institutions, and temporary installations, such as the renowned annual Serpentine Pavilion in 2017. Frequently relying on local materials and infrastructure, his work is marked by a profound simplicity and refreshing lightness, meeting technical problems with surprising and seemingly effortless solutions. It reflects his attitude that architecture should, in its most primary function, seek to improve the lives of the people who inhabit it. With mono.kultur, Francis Kéré talked about his long trajectory from a remote village in Africa to Berlin, his steadfast belief in optimism, and what makes a tree a perfect piece of architecture. Designwise, we followed Kéré’s principle to work with what is at hand, sourcing papers from dead stock at our printers’, essentially using an assortment of leftovers. And colour, of course, with the issue based on the national colours of Burkina Faso, paying tribute to the idea of culture as a shared ground to build upon.

Inspired by the press images from the Vietnam War that told a very different story to the official government statements, James Nachtwey found his calling that he would pursue with determination and compassion that are admirable: to document the effects of war, terror and disease. In the hope of raising awareness and inspiring intervention and change, his photographs are neither easy to look at nor easy to forget. Having witnessed and reported on the defining conflicts and tragedies of the past three decades – from the revolutions of South America and Eastern Europe to the famines in Africa, from 9/11 to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan – Nachtwey’s photographs focus on the costs of war: the suffering of civilians, the damage and the scars. There is no doubt that Nachtwey’s images are a challenge – to the powers that be by proposing an unflinching look at the reality on the ground, at the effects of politics on human lives, but also to us as their audience, by questioning our implication and, quite simply, by opening our eyes to the world. Die Hälfte des Verkaufspreises können die Straßenverkäufer*innen behalten.
Zur Medienpartnerschaft mit der fünfzehnten documenta:
Asphalt enthält in der Oktober-Ausgabe exklusiv die Namen aller ausstellenden KünstlerInnen der kommenden weltweit berühmten Kunstausstellung documenta 15 und ebenfalls exklusiv Beiträge des Artistic Teams der "documenta fifteen": Dahinter steckt das Kollektiv, mit indonesischen Wurzeln, ruangrupa (übersetzt: visueller Raum), welches die Praxis des lumbung umsetzt. lumbung ist indonesisch und bedeutet gemeinschaftlich genutzte Reisscheune. In einem System der Unterdrückung, wie es in Indonesien seit Suharto in der jüngeren Geschichte der Fall war und es immer noch ist, entstanden Plattformen, um Kunst möglich zu machen. Innerhalb des Kollektivs ruangrupa besteht das Kollektiv Serrum und Grafis Huru Hara; Kollektive innerhalb eines Kollektivs, so muss man sich auch die Dynamik und Philosophie der 15. documenta vorstellen.
