Diese neu konzipierte Ausstellung nimmt doppelt so viel Platz ein wie die ursprünglichen Getty-Ausstellungen Crosscurrents in L.A. Painting and Sculpture, 1950-1970 und Greetings from L.A.: Artists and Publics, 1950-1980 und enthält viele neue Werke, wie etwa Sam Francis' monumentales Gemälde Berlin Red, das 1969 in Los Angeles als Auftragsarbeit für die Neue Nationalgalerie entstand. Neu hinzugekommen sind auch mehr als 50 Fotografien von Julius Shulman, dem wichtigsten amerikanischen Architekturfotografen der Nachkriegszeit, eine Auswahl von Fotografien von Dennis Hopper sowie separate Galerien, die den Arbeiten der Künstler Larry Bell, Robert Graham, Bruce Nauman und James Turrell gewidmet sind.
Die Ausstellung ist sowohl chronologisch als auch thematisch aufgebaut und zeichnet den Aufstieg der südkalifornischen Kunstszene zwischen 1950 und 1980 nach. Sie zeigt Assemblage-Skulpturen und Collagen von Künstlern wie Ed Bereal, Wallace Berman und George Herms sowie Gemälde von David Hockney und Ed Ruscha. Hockneys ikonisches Gemälde A Bigger Splash von 1967 ist eines der Schlüsselwerke der Ausstellung.
Die Ausstellung geht auch der Frage nach, wie Künstler aus Südkalifornien die konventionelle Beziehung zwischen Kunst und Öffentlichkeit veränderten. Fotografien, Künstlerkataloge, Bücher, Plakate, Postkarten, Einladungen, Briefe und Kunstwerke veranschaulichen, wie diese Künstler Alternativen für eine öffentliche Rolle der Kunst und ihren Platz in der Gesellschaft entwickelten.

Seit 2004 stellt Deutschlands größtes Fotofestival alle zwei Jahre die ganze Bandbreite historischer und zeitgenössischer Fotografie in Berlin vor. Wegen des großen Erfolges finden sie in diesem Jahr erneut statt und werden von C/O Berlin kuratiert.

The project unfolds over the course of the month of July in six chapters that flow into one another, occasionally overlapping. INTERIORS TO BEING expands radically outwards, realizing half of its projects in Berlin’s public space.
The city of Berlin is a partner of INTERIORS TO BEING as any curator or participating artists in the program would be. The cityscape functions anthropomorphically–with the city’s growth and continual change impacting the way artists move within it. INTERIORS TO BEING internalizes these changes through the framework of its community. All contributors to INTERIORS TO BEING are part of the extensive creative network of PICTURE BERLIN (founded in 2009, a not-for-profit artist initiated hybrid residency/art academy), which is a community made up of more than two hundred international artists and curators, two-thirds of whom are based in Berlin.
The red thread running through all events is the dérive, a term devised by Situationist Guy Debord to describe an aimless wandering through different urban environments that leads to the development of a psycho-geographical awareness. «legal, illegal» stellt Aktionen von KünstlerInnen in den Mittelpunkt, bei denen die Grenzen zwischen künstlerischer Inszenierung und politischer Tat verschwinden, bei denen das Symbolische in Aktionismus, Illegalität oder gar Kriminalität mündet. Aktionen, die den Konflikt zwischen den Systemen Politik, Kunst und Leben deutlich machen. Das reichlich bebilderte Buch begleitete die gleichnamige Ausstellung, die vom 16.10.-28.11.2004 in den Räumen der «Neuen Gesellschaft für bildende Kunst» in Berlin stattfand. Neben der Ausstellung gab es Aktionen und Interventionen im Stadtraum Berlin. Im Anschluss war die Ausstellung in Neuhausen/Fildern zu sehen, ehe sie nach Venedig zur Biennale wanderte. Ausgangspunkt des Projektes bildet die Untersuchung von künstlerischen Aktionen in ihrem jeweiligen Medien und Politikkontext. Es werden Aktionen präsentiert und analysiert, die in einem Rahmen entstehen, in dem formell Kunst- und Meinungsfreiheit besteht, die jedoch bewusst als Provokation und Skandalproduktion die Grenzen der Legitimität überschreiten, um auf politische und gesellschaftliche Bedingungen aufmerksam zu machen oder um das Kunstsystem selbst in Frage zu stellen.
